One of my family’s favorite springtime camping recipes is for Smoky Gouda Burgers! It’s savory and delicious, and a great way to kick off your camping trips this season in your new or used RV – but we don’t blame you if you keep making it at home, too. Check it out below!

Camping Recipe

Smoky Gouda Burgers

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound 85/15% ground beef, divided into 4 equal portions
  • 4 slices smoked Gouda cheese
  • 4 Brioche buns
  • Bread & butter pickle chips
  • ½ cup French fried onions
  • 1/2 cup baby bella mushrooms, thinly diced
  • Worcestershire sauce, to taste
  • 2 Tbs butter
  • 1 Tbs olive oil
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Directions:

  • This recipe can be prepared by pan frying the burgers over a cooktop, or on a grill/griddle. Whichever you choose, bring your heat source to medium-high heat.
  • Prep the French fried onions: Place a paper towel on a paper plate, then sprinkle the French fried onions evenly over the paper towel. Microwave for 15 seconds to get them crispy and sizzling, then set aside.
  • Form four beef patties and flatten evenly to about 1/3” thickness. Season with salt and pepper.
  • If you’re using a skillet or flat top grill, add the butter and olive oil to the cooking surface. Skip this step if your grill has a grate.
  • Add the patties to the buttered, oiled surface and splash with some Worcestershire sauce. Grill until cooked through, about 4-6 minutes per side, flipping occasionally so they don’t scorch. It’s always best to cook meat to temperature, and well-done will be at 155-160 degrees.
  • Once the burgers are done but before you remove them from the griddle or pan, top each one with a slide of Gouda cheese. Remove from heat.
  • Immediately add the sliced mushrooms to the remaining beef drippings and quickly saute under tender, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Toast the buns while the mushrooms are sauteing, by placing briefly under the broiler.
  • Assemble in this order: bottom bun, cheeseburger, sweet pickle chips, mushrooms, and French fried onions, and bun top. Enjoy!

One of my favorite elements about this easy camping recipe is how it gives a fresh flavor to the classic burger. If you want to work smarter, not harder, consider buying your meat in pre-formed patties so all you need to do is throw some seasoning on it and let the grill do the rest!
